Open Question: Why Australians cant understand the Importance of " Indian Curry " ?

Eat Indian curry to lose weight Scientists believe that haldi, or turmeric, which is used in most Indian meals, has an active ingredient that can help fight obesity. A meal that includes haldi will lead to less weight gain than one without the yellow powder. This is because haldi contains a plant-based chemical called curcumin which suppresses the growth of fat tissue in mice and human cell cultures, according to a study by Tufts University in Boston, published in the Journal of Nutrition. Curcumin is also easily absorbed by the body, the researchers said, after experiments on mice. "Weight gain is the result of the growth and expansion of fat tissue, which cannot happen unless new blood vessels form, a process known as angiogenesis," said senior study author Mohsen Meydani of the Jean Mayer U.S. Department of Agriculture Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts. "Based on our data, curcumin appears to suppress angiogenic activity in the fat tissue of mice fed high fat diets," he said in a statement. In particular, turmeric is effective when added to a high-fat meal, suggesting it could help fight obesity. Researchers gave one set of mice high-fat diets and another set the same food with 500mg of curcumin added to each meal. After 12 weeks, the mice which were fed curcumin weighed less than those which did not eat it. The next step will be to perform clinical trials on humans, said the researchers. So,fat boy Netizen, time for you to eat Indian Curry !! more

Voting Question: cutting: proper nutrition help?

I want to ask you guys for your help. Since summer is coming up, i want to start cutting and lose the belly fat that i have. up until now, i have just been bulking. i do not know anything about nutrition, so all i did to bulk was work out as much as i could and eat everything i could find. But now that i want to slip down, i need to develop a proper nutrition diet. To make it easier for everyone. Does anybody know a website (preferrably free) that i could go to and put in all my data (weight, bmi, fat %, how much i want to lose) and have it give me suggestions that i could use to eat properly. If not, then maybe you can help me. I have heard that i need to double my intake of protein and almost eliminate my intake of carbs. Also, reduce my calorie intake from >3000 (which is probably what i have been at) to around 2500. I am 6 ft tall and weigh 175 lbs. i do not have a lot of fat, just a little around my waist, and some people would even say that i am skinny...i max out benching at 240, and regularly bench 3 sets of 10 of 75-80 lb dumbells. Also, i curl using 35-40 lbs and do skull crushers with 85 lb ez-bar. I work out for about an hour and a half each time, but have only recently started swimming ~10 laps or running 3-4 miles every time. so now hopefully you can picture how i am. But, i want to stress that losing weight is easy. Last year I lost 15 lbs in one month by eating an apple a day (more or less)...so i have the will and mind power to do it. But my problem is that i do not want to lose the muscle that i have... I need to get proper nutrition in order to lost the fat and keep the muscle...that was my mistake last time, since i was left with nothing. I tried looking around the internet in places such as bodybuilding.com....but those websites are so big that it is overwhelming and i do not learn anything. Could someone please help me by simplifying it for me (not too simplistic please) and explain it to me so i can use it day to day. If you could, please even tell me foods that are great to eat when someone cuts and foods that should be avoided. Thank you very much. more

Resolved Question: Directors of the UN Codex Alimentarius program say "nutrients are toxins." Will you help oppose this insanity?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RF2mg5krIjc Codex Alimentarius Summarized in 7 Points There is much misinformation about Codex Alimentarius on the internet, and we have endeavoured to check our sources of information to bring you the most correct data possible. If you have any specific questions or queries you can email us at our email address here. Codex Alimentarius is most important to understand as it will have very serious impact in longer-term, especially if the risk assessment system that it proposes to use to establish maximum allowed dosages is not changed over the coming months. With the Codex Alimentarius Commission set to put in place international standards we could see: The degradation and undermining of organic standards so that “organic food” can contain various chemical additives and processing aids. Flagrant disregard of their own directive to protect consumer safety by setting standards that allow for significant residues of pesticides in foods (as much as 3275 including those that are suspected carcinogens or endocrine disrupters) An understatement of nutritional requirements for long term optimum health of the consumers it seeks to protect by setting unnecessarily low Nutrient Reference Values The forcing of therapeutic grade vitamins and minerals to be reclassified as drugs by default by setting very low maximum level dosages for supplements using flawed risk assessment methods The way paved for implementation of GM food plants and GM animals by arguing that world food requirements cannot be met without global implementation of GM animals World agricultural populations economically vulnerable to crop failures during natural disasters, droughts or floods by approving “Terminator” seeds for international trade If we allow Codex to implement these strategies eventually: The world population will not know what it is eating The world population will not know why it is getting sick The world population will not have access to information, natural nutrients or natural medicines that can make it well Codex Use Junk Science to Declare that “Nutrients are Toxins” The Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) has two committees which impact nutrition. One of them is the “Codex Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses” (CCNFSDU). The host government for this committee is non other than the Federal Republic of Germany! This committee is chaired by the Dr. Rolf Grossklaus, a German physician who believes that nutrition has no role in health. This is the “head hauncho” for Codex nutritional policy, and he has stated that “nutrition is not relevant to health”. In 1994, as "barking mad" as it may sound, Dr. Grossklaus has also instituted the use of toxicology (Risk Assessment) to prevent nutrients from having any therapeutic impact on humans who take supplements in the name of "Public Safety"! The science of toxicology or Risk Assessment is the current method for assessing pharmaceutical drugs and is completely absurd and unscientific to apply to nutrients. While Risk Assessment is a legitimate science (it is a branch of toxicology), it is the wrong science for assessing nutrients! In fact, in this context, it is actually junk science. Biochemistry, the science of life processes, is the correct science for assessing nutrients. Codex Alimentarius treats nutrients as toxins, which is literally insane. Nutrients are not toxins - they are essential for life. http://www.healthfreedom.co.nz/codex_alimentarius.htm http://www.healthfreedomusa.org/?page_id=184 more

Resolved Question: How much are we supposed to eat in one day?

It seems there is always a different answer to this question, maybe since people's eating habits are so different, but there is probably a real answer out there some place with actual data. How much are we supposed to eat in one day? Whether you are a male, female, obese, anorexic, short, buff... I would like to hear your answers. To make it a little more interesting, I will tell you what I ate today. Since I have been sick, and have been out of town, the times may seem misconstrued but they are real times. Friends called me to go to Coffee Bean, I ordered: -Regular Mucho Mango FruTea -Plain Bagel with Butter Later on, met with different friends: - very busy, so we opted for a Chipotle Burrito Went to girlfriends house, and she got treats and a movie: - I ate strawberry ice cream 1 pint (1/2 gallon) Here are the nutrition facts about SOME of the items I listed above. All of the items above, is everything I consumed in 24 hour period. I also drink 8+ glasses of water today. I am not sure if that plays a factor. Ice Cream: 34 total fat g/20 saturate fat g 560 calories Chiptole Chicken Burrito: 21 total fat g/6 saturated fat g 815 calories Coffee Bean: FruTea 0g of fat, 240 calories Plain Bagel: 1g fat/ 290 calories So a long story short, that's 56 g fat 26 saturated fat g 1,905 calories Any additional comments, suggestions or help would be nice. By the way, how old do you think I am, and how do you think I weigh? Thanks . Ciao. more

Resolved Question: Do you believe race is assosicated with IQ?

http://www.harbornet.com/folks/theedrich/JP_Rushton/Race.htm ^ This article tries make it out to be but I doubt it. They same blacks have smaller brains which was proven false. Three time Nobel nominated anthropologist Philip Tobias (1970), compared 7 racial and national groups in a study on brain size/weight, in which he reported that the brain size of American blacks was larger than any white group, (which included American, English and French whites) except those from the Swedish sub sample (who had the largest brains of any of the groups measured), and American blacks were estimated to have some 200 million more neurons than American whites, and brains that were reported to be 54g heavier (See Tobias 1970; Weizmann et al. 1990). Gould (1981, 1996) discovered upon recalculating Morton’s highly suspicious brain size data that the blacks in his sample were on average larger in brain volume than whites. Morton included in his sample of blacks more females than he included in the white sample. For example, in his analysis of Hottentotts (black tribe from South Africa) all measured crania were of females; the Englishmen were all mature men. Morton had also eliminated especially large brains from the African group and especially small brains from the European group (Gould, 1981, 1996). After correcting these biases and errors, it was shown that the black sample actually had larger brains than did the white sample (ibid). erestingly, during the time periods in which the samples for the above mentioned studies were gathered, anthropomorphic research shows that blacks were on average physically smaller (in stature) than whites, lived in inferior environments and received poorer nutrition (e.g. Alan 2006, 2007; ). Indicating that in spite of these environmental disadvantages, relatively lower anthropomorphic measurements and poorer nutritional intake, blacks still demonstrated larger brain volume. Tobias (1970) discusses factors which influence brain weight; in this discussion he includes nutrition. Tobias (1970) also discusses the sampling problems one may encounter with fresh brains. Also Bond (1924) early last century pointed out that the average IQ scores of African Americans from several northern states were higher than those for whites from many southern states (Bond, 1924a, p. 63). Studies also show that upward of 99% of group IQ score differences between healthy black and white Americans are eliminated after controlling for simple cultural factors. In the United States, when matched for IQ with Whites, American Blacks have been shown to demonstrate superior “Working Memory” (Nijenhuis et al., 2004). This is an interesting finding, as African Americans are typically taught by less qualified teachers (e.g. non-certified teachers and teachers with limited experience) than their white counterparts, and are provided with less challenging school work (Hallinan 1994; Diamond et al., 2004; Uhlenberg and Brown 2004). In Chicago, for example, the vast majority of schools placed on academic probation as part of the district accountability efforts were majority African-American and low-income (Diamond and Spillane 2004). Thus, it is somewhat surprising that African Americans should outperform white Americans on any portion of a paper and pencil test designed to mimic the structures of western style schooling (Richardson, 2000, 2002). In the United States, when matched for IQ with Whites, American Blacks have been shown to demonstrate superior “Working Memory” (Nijenhuis et al., 2004). Resolved Question: If you look at nutrition data, why is it that raw foods have beter amino acid ratios and more protein when raw?

SOURCES PLEASEEEI looked up cabbage and its amino acid ratio was two higher in the raw. Is this because of the enzymes that don't get destroyed in the cooking process? And so there for theres more protein in raw food per calorie totals? If someone elaborated on this topic. That would be nice. more

Resolved Question: What would be a good basic summary of this article?

I just need help i am not good at summarizing. Teachers always complain because i tend to plagiarize. Anorexia Nervosa 56% Genetic Do not judge anorexics harshly. Their genes make them do it. CHAPEL HILL – A new study led by University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill researchers estimates that 56 percent of the liability for developing anorexia nervosa is determined by genetics. In addition, the study found that the personality trait of "neuroticism" (a tendency to be anxious and depressed) earlier in life is a significant factor associated with development of the eating disorder later. Anorexia nervosa is a psychiatric illness characterized by an individual’s refusal to maintain a minimally acceptable body weight, intense fear of weight gain and a distorted body image. It occurs primarily among females in adolescence and young adulthood and is associated with the highest mortality rate of any mental disorder. People prone to depression and anxiety are more prone to anorexia nervosa. So would anti-depressants and/or anti-anxiety drugs reduce the incidence of anorexia? This study is the first published in the medical literature to estimate how much liability for developing anorexia nervosa is due to genetics, and the first to find a statistically significant association between the prospective risk factor of neuroticism and later development of anorexia, said Dr. Cynthia M. Bulik, lead author of the study, published in the March issue of the Archives of General Psychiatry. "What this study shows is that anorexia nervosa is moderately heritable and may be predicted by the presence of early neuroticism, which reflects proneness to depression and anxiety," Bulik said. "Fifty-six percent heritability – that’s a fairly large contribution of genes. The remaining liability is due to environmental factors." Bulik is the William R. and Jeanne H. Jordan distinguished professor of eating disorders in UNC’s School of Medicine and director of the UNC Eating Disorders Program at UNC Hospitals. She also is a professor of nutrition, a department housed in the schools of public health and medicine, and holds the only endowed professorship in eating disorders nationwide. The reason she and her co-authors reached these conclusions where previous studies could not, Bulik said, is that their study was based on data obtained from screening a very large sample of twins. Their sample, from the Swedish Twin Registry, consisted of 31,406 individuals born between 1935 and 1958. None of the previous studies had samples nearly as large, Bulik said. Twin studies continue to produce a wealth of scientific information about the human heredity. The US National Institute for Mental Health says the death rate from anorexia nervosa is pretty high. An estimated 0.5 to 3.7 percent of females suffer from anorexia nervosa in their lifetime. The mortality rate among people with anorexia has been estimated at 0.56 percent per year, or approximately 5.6 percent per decade, which is about 12 times higher than the annual death rate due to all causes of death among females ages 15-24 in the general population. But a March 2003 Mayo Clinic study found that the death rate from anorexia nervosa is no higher than among the general population. ROCHESTER, Minn. — A long-term study of patients in Rochester, Minn., with the eating disorder anorexia nervosa found that their survival rates did not differ from the expected survival rates of others of the same age and sex. The results, published in the March issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, add to the knowledge of anorexia nervosa and point to other areas that need greater study from researchers. “Although our data suggest that overall mortality is not increased among community patients with anorexia nervosa in general, these findings should not lead to complacency in clinical practice because deaths do occur,” says L. Joseph Melton, III, M.D., Mayo Clinic epidemiologist and an author of the report. One argument for the cause of the discrepancy is that other studies used anorexia nervosa sufferers who were sick enough to require hospitalization. Whereas a larger set of all anorexia nervosa sufferers as the Mayo Clinic used brings in people who have less severe cases. The Mayo Clinic also has a public health information web page that claims anorexia does cause a high mortality rate. Anorexia typically has numerous complications. At its most severe, it can be fatal. Anorexia has one of the higher deaths rates among all mental illnesses, hovering around 5 percent but perhaps even higher than that. Perhaps some anorexia patients have such severe symptoms that they damage their bodies through malnutrition while other anorexia patients end up eating more like calorie restriction dieters and perhaps even gain some life expectancy as a result. Though that seems unlikely since the calorie restrictionists try hard to make sure they get enough vitamin more

Resolved Question: Where do I even start for my Master's nutrition thesis?

I'm very confused on where to start for this. I know I must formulate an idea, but can I latch on to a professor that is already conducting research in that area, and propose my own question to it and analyze data from that professor's research and write my thesis from it? Or do I have to do the study from scratch and design and conduct everything - blood draws, interviews, etc. Also, how do I form a thesis committee and where does the funding come from for the research?Note: I don't plan on formulating my thesis for at least a year - I have at least 2 years in my program. Resolved Question: Can someone proofread my argumentative essay?

Can someone proofread my argumentative essay? Feel free to make changes if needed. P.S. sorry if it seems long... In the United States, many people like to go out to dine at restaurants and fast food places on daily basics. People can turn their head to the right and left and they could see someone next to them who is obese or overweight. “Approximately 22 million children under five years of age are overweight. During the past three decades, the number of overweight children in the Unites States has more than doubled. In 1983, 18.6 percent of preschool children in the United States were defined as overweight, and 8.5 percent were defined as obese; by 2000, 22.0 percent of preschool children were overweight and 10.0 percent were obese”(Decklbaum and Williams p. 239S). Childhood obesity is an “epidemic” in America as many children are either overweight or obese. The reasons for childhood obesity are lack of exercise, healthy eating and nutrition, health problems, and low self-esteem. The lack of exercise and physical activities is one reason for childhood obesity. Therefore, there are many elementary schools that do not have any physical education teachers to teach exercise. For example, many elementary schools would have teachers who have no background in physical education teach students about exercising. Instead, they would tell students to go outside during class time about once a week to play kick ball or softball and that would be their exercise for the week. Another reason for not exercising is technology. Many children do not want to go outside to play with their friends, exercise or do any sport participation. They rather stay at home to chat with their friends over the Internet using Yahoo Messenger or AIM (software programs that allow people to chat with each other). They also rather stay at home and spend hours in front of a television playing video games and watching television shows like Rob and Big, CSI, and Sponge Bob. “Television viewing often is considered one of the most modifiable causes of obesity in children. Children spend a substantial part of their lives in front of the television set. Recent parent-report and self-report data from a nationally representative sample of 3155 children indicate that 2- to 7-year-old children in the United States spend an average of approximately 2.5 hours per day and 8- to 18-year-old children spend an average of about 4.5 hours per day watching television and playing video games. When these data are combined with typical sleep data from children, it is found that children in the United States are spending more than 25% of their waking hours in front of the television set” This shows that technology is a big influence on why children do not want to exercise or do any physical activities. Many children who are obese in America do not eat healthy or have proper nutrition. Now a day, many parents are busy with work so it is easier for them to drive to McDonald’s or Burger King’s to order some fast food meals along with soft drinks for their children. Instead of cooking a meal and having their children drink water. In addition, these fast food restaurants like McDonald’s would try to convince their customer’s by asking them if they would like to “Supersize” their meals, so they can have larger portion of French fries and larger soft drink’s that would cost a few cents more. “As children's body weights have increased, so has their consumption of fast foods and soft drinks. The proportion of foods that children consumed from restaurants and fast food outlets increased by nearly 300% between 1977 and 1996. Children's soft drink consumption has also increased during those years, and now soft drinks provide soft drink consumers 188 kcal/d beyond the energy intake of nonconsumers”. Proper nutrition is essential and yet many children are not consuming enough fiber per day. Instead, they are consuming less than 10 grams of fiber per day and less than 25 grams per day during adulthood. “A 5-year-old child should consume at least 10 g of fiber per day and fiber intake should approach adult levels (20–25 g per day) by 15 years of age. Unfortunately, persons of all ages in the United States eat far fewer than the recommended number of servings of whole-grain products, vegetables, and fruits. In 1994 to 1996, only 3% of individuals 2 years of age consumed 3 daily servings of vegetables (with at least one third being dark green or orange vegetables), whereas only 7% consumed 6 daily servings of grains (with 3 being whole grains). Currently, dietary fiber intake throughout childhood and adolescence averages 12 g/day or 5 g/1000 kcal (4200 kJ), a level of intake that has not changed in the past 30 years. Because total carbohydrate content has increased considerably during this period, most of this increase seems to be in the form of fiber-poor refined grains, starchy vegetables, and sugar-sweetened beverages” The lack of knowledge about nut more

Voting Question: biology in the news?

ok well i had to do a report but im not sure if this leans more toward health or biology. could i use this for my biology report?........... Lack of Vitamin D Boosts Death Risk Many people aren't getting enough of the sunlight-sourced nutrient, researchers say Printer-friendly version Printer-friendly version HealthDay Monday, August 11, 2008 HealthDay news image MONDAY, Aug. 11 (HealthDay News) -- Inadequate vitamin D could increase your risk of death by 26 percent, a new study concludes. Yet many people are not getting enough vitamin D, which the skin makes naturally when exposed to sunlight. A nationwide survey found that 41 percent of men and 53 percent of women in the United States were not getting enough of this vital nutrient. "The importance of vitamin D may be underappreciated," said lead author Dr. Michal Melamed, a clinical fellow at Johns Hopkins University. "There are studies that link low vitamin D levels to the development of heart disease, peripheral arterial disease, diabetes, hypertension and different cancers," she said. The report was published in the Aug. 11 online edition of the Archives of Internal Medicine. For the study, Melamed's team collected data on more than 13,000 men and women who took part in the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Levels of vitamin D were collected in 1988 and 1994, and the participants were followed through 2000. During more than eight and a half years of follow-up, 1,806 people died. Among these, 777 died from cardiovascular disease. Four hundred of these people were found to be deficient in their vitamin D levels. "Those who had the lowest levels of vitamin D had a 26 percent higher risk of death from all causes compared to those with the highest vitamin D levels," Melamed noted. The findings in this study confirm a trend seen in other studies linking vitamin D deficiency to increased risk for breast cancer and depression in the elderly, the researchers noted. Melamed's group had previously shown that vitamin D deficiency increases the risk of peripheral artery disease (circulatory problems in the legs) by 80 percent. Among other things, vitamin D is essential for maintaining levels of calcium and phosphorus in the body. "Vitamin D may be very important for overall health," Melamed said. According to the U.S. Institute of Medicine, people should get between 200 and 400 international units of vitamin D a day. The best way to get vitamin D, naturally, is by being out in the sun. As little as 10 to 15 minutes of sun a day can give you all a vitamin D you need. Vitamin D is also available in small quantities in foods such as fish and milk. Whether vitamin D supplements are effective isn't yet known, Melamed said. "That's the million-dollar question," she said. "I think people should optimize their diet and sun exposure to get an adequate level of vitamin D without taking supplements," Melamed said. "It may be a good idea for people who are at risk for vitamin D deficiency, including African Americans and people who don't spend a lot of time in the sun, to get their vitamin D levels checked by their doctor." Dr. Michael F. Holick, director of the Vitamin D, Skin and Bone Research Laboratory at Boston University Medical Center, advocates high levels of vitamin D supplements to maintain good health. Vitamin D deficiency is probably the most common medical problem worldwide, Holick said. "We know that being vitamin D sufficient reduces the risk of having your first heart attack by more than 50 percent, reduces the risk of having peripheral vascular disease by as much is 80 percent and decreases the risk of prostate, colon, breast and a whole host of other cancers by as much is 50 to 70 percent," Holick said. In addition, not getting enough vitamin D also increases your risk for type 2 diabetes, Holick noted. By increasing your vitamin D intake to 800 international units a day reduces the risk of developing diabetes by as much as a third, he said. Holick recommends taking high doses of vitamin D supplements, as well as sun exposure. In addition, Holick recommends taking as much as 1,400 international units of a vitamin D supplement every day. Resolved Question: Pepita (pumpkin seeds) Nutritional Info

I read pumpkin seeds have a lot of zinc, so I picked up a bag labeled "Raw Pepitas: La Pluma Variety" from a Trader Joe's. Apparently, pepitas = pumpkin seeds, but when I look at the Nutrition data on the back of the bag and on-line, it seems that "pepitas" have no zinc what so ever and "pumpkin seeds" have a lot. My question(s): Are pepita seeds the same as pumpkin seeds, and if so how much zinc is in a serving of raw pepitas? more

Resolved Question: IQ and the Wealth of Nations question?

For those of you who have never heard of the book, it's a hated piece of research that compiled the data of IQ tests administered in different countries and basically came to the conclusion that Asians are smart, Europeans are normal, South Americans and Middle Easterners are dumb, and Africans are retarded. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iq_and_the_wealth_of_nations Please make note that I am neither endorsing nor discrediting the book. I take a completely neutral stance on it. My question is this: some people say that poor nutrition and lack of education are the reason for low IQs in certain undeveloped countries. But I know more than a little about IQ; for example, a common IQ test called the Raven Progressive Matrices does not require any knowledge whatsoever, as it consists of sets of abstract shapes. You complete the set, find the next logical shape, etc. And it's been found that the demographic groups in question perform poorly on this test too. cont'd>>>Secondly, all the research over time has shown a high heritability for IQ, something like 80%. For the daft, that means your genes are responsible for 80% of your intelligence. Given all this, isn't it more likely that low national IQs are the cause of malnutrition and lack of education, rather than the effect? Or that they are a mutually reinforcing vicious circle? more

Resolved Question: plase just briefly explain the following article because it was a little but long!?

As human beings, reality is what we perceive with our senses. For most people, the eyes and ears are the chief senses and it is through what we see and hear that reality is created. Hours spent in front of the television, listening to the radio in the car, reading print, or more recently surfing the Internet we as a people are continually fed a constant stream of news and information. This media affects how we think and how we think affects our actions. As a result, studying media is also the study of human behaviour. Despite this, many people do not question what they see or hear. They do not stop for one second to think whether what they are watching or listening to is truth, part-truth, or outright lies. They feel that if a man in a suit speaks in a serious tone about certain global issues then what he says must be true. It is such passive acceptance of media which is dangerous because we must not forget that in this capitalist world we live in everything is driven by a motive and more often than not that motive is profit. Therefore, if the media reports about a recent study of how eating eggs is good for you, one must stop to question this advice instead of blindly cracking eggs and cooking them for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. For example, who sponsored the study that led to the conclusion that eating eggs is good for you? Most likely, the financial backing to conduct that study came from egg farmers who would see increased profits from people believing that consuming more eggs was healthy. Then we must ask how scientific the study was or how many people were involved. If the participants of the study was a small group then it hardly represents the population and the results could be tainted. In addition, we must question whether the study was conducted or bought. It is not inconceivable to consider that scientific studies could be made up to support a desired position. In contrast, to such critical thinking most people just blindly accept such health advice and it seems every day someone is telling us that either drinking a glass of wine a day is good for our hearts, omega 3 fats are good for us, or green tea prevents cancer. Who are we to believe? It is almost impossible for the average consumer to wade through all the scientific and pseudo-scientific data to discover the truth. It is ironic that in this the first decade of the twenty first century despite how much more we know compared to our parents and their parents before them, our health is worse than ever. We are a society of obese men and women, and more frighteningly obese children. Our ancestors did not count calories or read nutrition labels and yet they had far fewer medical conditions than we do now. Such observation is in direct conflict with how valid these scientific studies claim to be. Media shaping our thinking however, is not confined only to nutrition. The ongoing war in the Middle East, primarily with the United States' forces in Iraq have been criticized as a war for oil and not a war against oppression and terrorism as the world was initially led to believe. Who can forget that the United Nations decided that the United States did not have the right to invade Iraq, but the US went ahead anyway on the excuse that Iraq was hiding weapons of mass destruction. To this day, no weapons of mass destruction were ever found. Who can forget the horrifying images of the burning Twin Towers in New York City and the thousands of dying as a result of the 9/11 attacks on the US. The American public's fear and paranoia were played upon to justify attacking Iraq on which to this day there is scant evidence to suggest that it played such a role in the attacks as to warrant the spending of billions and the deaths of so many US soldiers on foreign soil. Many believe that the current economic crisis in the US which is also spreading around the world is the result of the United States using up all its money in a war no one wants fought. Many are starting to doubt that the war in Iraq is about good versus evil. Rather many believe that it was an attempt by certain high level individuals to profit from the war. The people who profit from a war are the people who make the tanks and bombs. There is evidence to suggest that the Bush family owns companies which make weapons for the war. This is an obvious conflict of interest, but this is what happens when public decision is based on fear instead of reason. As a society we must realize that the media shapes the way we think and if we do not monitor our thoughts then we can be manipulated into buying things that are unhealthy for us or even voting for leaders that do not have our best interests at heart. more

Resolved Question: In Excel how do I formula to adjacent cells when using a list?

I want to create a spreadsheet to calculate nutrition based on foods I eat. FOOD, SERVING SIZE, CARBS, PROTEIN, FAT etc. I've created the drop-down list in the main sheet already, that's no problem. How can I then create a formula in the main sheet which says "this cell is to equal the contents of the adjacent cells to the one I have selected from the drop-down list" in the previous cell? Resolved Question: Forced to eat meat?

so for a wellness project we are suppose to track what we eat for a week, then, the next week, we are given a list f what we need to eat that is "perfect nutrition", and we have to follow it. We then enter the data into a computer and it will show us the difference in our nutrition between the 2 weeks. I am a vegetarian and the 2nd week i am required to eat meat. out of the 15 people in my wellness class 2 of us are vegetarians and we tried to explain to the teacher how we could still have good nutrition w/o meat, and it wasn't fair to force us to eat meat. She said if we didn't do it we would get a 0 for the project. What should I do? do you think this is fair?i am a freshman at high school...and yeah i would go to the deani don't really want to go to the dean.
