Voting Question: please help me find the best dry cat food?

my cat hates the raw diet and wet food so please don't lecture me on that, i have tried several flavors and brands and as a topper and he either cries for hours or eats around it. he has a water fountain at all times. and i always acclimate him to food. i think the junk foods like friskies and meow mix is better for him actually, shiny coat and solid stools. whenever i give him "premium" or "organic foods" like natures recipe, solid gold, or nutro it seems to be too rich for him, he gets diarrehrea and his coat is full of dandruff. now the junk food is what he enjoys (friskies, meow mix) and it is affordable. but its junk and i would wnat him on something healthier, without the dandruff and messy stools, and he refuses to eat science diet, which is ok because it is just overpriced junk food. what do you recommend? and please no raw or wet diets i have tried them he hates it and im not going to let him starve so i can say "o ya i feed raw only" more

Voting Question: Would you live in Cambridge uk or Australia?

In Australia: You live 5-10 minutes from the sea but can't swim in most of the year due to riptides, high winds, sand storms and sharks, but it is gorgeous to look at! The sun is alwas shining, you cannot have a car (not affordable) so have to walk in the heat a lot and feel like you are baking often! Winter is cold as there is no heating. Childcare isn't great so you have to stay at home with your chidren. Which is a good thing in a lot of ways, but even if you did want to get a part-time job to continue a career you've worked long and hard for (5 years at uni) there are no part-time jobs. Food is very, very expenisve and there is little organic food You are skint The only place you can afford is a rental and it is small, dingy and overlooked by flats. Very noisy. Bad colours, rats in roof, moths (have to keep all food in fridge), silverfish, ants, cochroaches. Husband has a job but no real prospects and constant threat of redundancy You cannot see family or friends and cannot save enough money to go home (England) Buut weather is better, the area is less affected by recession, aparently it offers a better quality of life for children, if you did manage to get a car you could do lots of outdoorsy things ( or at least carsy things!), swimming pools are great here, evenigs ar elovely outside if you can fight the mosquitos! In Cambridge: You can cycle everywhere There might be more job prospects for both huisband and wife Better childcare BUT schools are probably poorer Not sure whether crime worse? Near (er) to friends and family and support MPre affordable Here you could buy a house and do dream of having enough garden to grow your own fruit and vegetanles, and childen can run around without fear of burning or being watched Probably don't need a car (don't like them...) Wether is gloomy, rains a lot BUT you don't feel like you are baking and constantly have to buy sun screen and worry about skin cancer You can holiday in Italy, France, Ireland, Egypt cheaply as they are relatively close and reltives have houses in those areas Family can eat better - more organic, home produced food We'd have a home and could settle Which is better for us and our children? more

Resolved Question: news article on yahoo-1 in 5 4 year olds obese?

why?...because we are lied to about our toxic food supply, about the chemical concoctions that are approved of as food, that organic whole foods are not affordable for most people, that promoting activity is the only solution. sure but an over-haul of what constitutes as food is greatly needed, but will it happen?..not with big pharma getting billions to treat the myriad of health problems this system is creating. agreed? more

Resolved Question: What should I be looking for to determine the QUALITY of vitamins?

My husband & I have decided to add vitamins to our diet. He is in his 40's me my 30's. We have a very busy lifestyle, with 4 young children & we each work full-time with part-time jobs. We average 6 hrs of sleep. I would like to think we eat "well" but we do not. All meals are ate at home. Our meat is all home grown & organic or wild.. (beef, pork, lamb, pheasant etc, venison) We eat lots of vegatables esp in the fall with 50% of our veggies being garden raised. (Not that we are health food nuts, but it is cheaper to raise your own if you have the means) Fruit is not ate very often in our home. (except by the kids) Canola oil is used in place of vegetable oil. I am overweight, my husband is a little but does more physically demanding work that I. We both have arthritis (me rhuematory, him osteo) We drink lots of water not much milk... I never drink milk. And sorry we will not be adding chicken or fish to our diets. My question is how do you determine, by looking at a label, the difference in vitamins. How do I know what is easily and readily used by the body? I do not wish to try to balance vitamins myself by taking several. Can anyone suggest a good colon cleansing product as well? If you know of a good vitamin brand that is affordable please recommend. We are on a tight income so spending $100 per month is crazy to us.I have heard One a Day's are not that beneficial & the body does not utilize much of them...basically just flushing it down the toilet. Ensure? gross...are you kidding me?Thanks guy in the city, we are carnivores...LOL Can't stand the taste of olive oil, tried it. We do drink V-8 occasionally. Bread is always whole wheat and usually homemade. Our pasta is not whole wheat tho.Oh, believe me I KNOW we don't get enuf sleep but there are not enuf hours in the day. more

Resolved Question: Where could I find more affordable organic or good all natural foods?

I live in Toledo, Ohio and I found better pricing at meijer, but it still isn't something I can afford to eat all of the time. I make decent money but not enough for $8 for a mini pizza LOL. Any ideas would be good. It's too cold for farmer's market and stuff like that. I'd like to know if people have been somewhere where it's cheaper? Maybe walmart? more

Resolved Question: Why aren't people told about the harmful things in tampons?

Rayon and dioxin should not go in a tampon of all things. If people can buy chlorine- free organic cotton tampons at health food stores, then why not Wal-mart or other popular, convenient grocery stores, and at affordable prices too. I can't imagine why companies like Tampax, Playtex, and Kotex wouldn't want to give people the best products possible if they really had values... I guess my question is, Why are the health effects of these products widely known. I mean, TSS is (but that's an effect that tampons will always have).  more

Resolved Question: My dog is finicky. Please help! What should I do?

I got a 7 year old Maltese a few weeks ago and she is wonderful....except for the fact that she is picky about food. The former owners fed her only IAMS dry mini chunks. She didn't seem to be eating this though so I was getting worried. I thought she would settle down and eat it by now but she's hardly touched the stuff. I tried wet food and she likes it better, depending on the brand. She seems to like the wet Beneful best, the kind in the small plastic tub with the reclosable lid. It's convinient and affordable and she doesn't turn her nose up to is like she has with some 'gourmet' or 'organic' food. I am worried the Beneful may not be the healthiest dog food but I figure at least she eats it up...most of the time. She doesn't seem very hungry in the morning, I feed her twice per day, morning and night. Someone suggested feeding her once per day at night. Is this healthy for a small dog? Also, should I try switching her dry food? The former owners said she has been eating IAMS for years! Should I try a different dry food and leave some out for her during the day? The IAMS chunks seem a bit to large and hard for her. Is there a softer dry food? How much should I be feeding her? She is 6.9 lbs and the groomer and other dog experts say she isn't underweight. I also have all her vet records saying she is a healthy dog. She is energetic and active, like a puppy sometimes. I just want to do what is best for her. For now I am feeding her the Beneful twice per day. I tried mixing it with the IAMS chunks and she just eats the wet food and leaves the dry behind. Should I just let it be and give her what she likes? Or should I keep trying other foods and see what works? Does anyone else have a Maltese? What food do you feed him/her? I read that they can be picky eaters but nobody seems to have a solution for this. What should I do? The former owner admitted she was fed 'people food' a lot. I didn't want to get her begging so I never do. Could this have 'spoiled' her? She doesn't beg (now that she knows she can't have people food she doesn't try) and she doesn't have any food aggression problems...It just seems to me, this dog isn't very into food! She likes soft treats but not hard ones so I am thinking maybe a moist dry food would work. What brand makes this for dogs?To Laura W...I agree with you about NEVER giving dogs people food! My mom did this with her dogs since I was a kid and even when I was 8 years old, I saw the problems with 'people food' long ago. She always ends up with a spoiled, begging, bratty, fat dog! Everytime I go to her house I CRINGE as she says "Does da' cute baby want a potato chip?" as she feeds her dog. I REFUSE to feed her fat, begging dog! Mom thinks the begging is 'cute' but it's her dog so I can't say anything. I've told her for years and she doesn't get it. I always vowed to NEVER do this to my dog! Dog food is for dogs, people food is for people! I seriously think my little Chloe was spoiled with food. I hope that over time I can find the healtiest food and get her taste buds used to having DOG FOOD ONLY! For now, it's just hard to get her to eat anything so I am sticking to the IAMS and Beneful until I learn more.Oh yeah, I did some research on 'healthy' brands and I am aware Beneful isn't the best brand health-wise. I tried some of the high end, 'healthy' wet foods and she pretty much turned up her nose and walked away. I was thinking too that Beneful LOOKS like 'people food' with veggies and a rich gravy so maybe it's a good food for now to 'wean' her off of people food until I can learn some more! more

Resolved Question: Can you recommend a widely available organic food brand?

I enjoy eating organic when possible (and affordable) and I often buy the O Organics brand of food available at Safeway. Are there any other brands of USDA certified organic foods that are fairly affordable and widely available at major grocery stores like Safeway, Top Foods, Fred Meyer, etc.? Please, no answers about how organic food is a "scam." Also, I do shop at farmer's markets and health food stores occasionally. I am just wondering about the major grocery stores like I said above. Resolved Question: I Have a New Cat, How Do I make the best food Selection Choice for her? Can I switch her current food?

I just adopted a 3 yr old female cat, whom I have known since her birth. She was my best friend’s cat, which she got back when she used to work at a vet. ER. She gave me an almost empty dry cat food bag called “alta cat”? I think, the bag is at home. I have done searches and I can’t find this brand or even anything that sounds like it. She said it was an organic very cheap cat food. I have a feeling that it is a local food since she lives in a small city 100 miles from me. She told me not to switch the food. I am thinking about going out and buying the natural brand of dry cat food, once I have had time to research them. Adding a little at a time until her current food runs out. I am worried to start her on a wet food because I heard cat’s balloon up. I have done a little research on the stuff to look for on her food’s label: shouldn’t include by products, just the word “meat”, corn, corn gluten, what gluten, BHA or BHT, OR animal digest…I eat healthy and I want my baby to eat good too. However, she did work in a vet hospital for two years, should I listen to her? What should I do? Also, what is the best cat scratch post at an affordable price? I know very little about cat’s health. Please help. Also, if you don’t know, there is no need to write “I don’t know.” This really doesn’t help anyone. You either have some information, or you move onto the next question and hope you have some knowledge for that person. THANK YOUNone of those sites worked... Except one. I already got some great advice from this question: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AvZ3lactL9J4yddWdGEacSLsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20080226140829AAxAcB2 I really just want to know what some opionions are on this. Resolved Question: Does eating organic/healthy really make a huge difference?

I try to eat as healthy and organic as possible, but sometimes that's just not possible (or affordable) so I choose as close to healthy as possible. I choose subs with no cheeses or fatty meats on whole wheat bread with lots of veggies, absolutely NO fast food, and if i ever have snacks or deserts is the healthy weight watchers or all natural stuff. I also go to the vitamin shop for a plethora of supplements and whole food bars/organic bars which have over 50 different organic ingredients in them. I know supplements are not a substitute for the real thing but they help. If I do all of this on a weekly routine, and exercize and drink lots of water per day, will this REALLY ward off very bad health and bad health problems, or at least reduce the severity? more

Resolved Question: Can anyone suggest an alternative to USDA organic certification?

Please Yahoo: Feature this question, it is very important. All sorts of research point out that organic food is healthier for people and better for the environment. No one can scientifically refute that. If more people can see one important value of organic products which is higher nutrition, more people would be willing to spend a little more on organic foods. But even though a lot of producers and dealers believe in the goodness of organic products, they don't want to go through the certification process because it can be very expensive. People: this is what they mean by "scam" ... the benefits of organic foods ARE real. But farmers think it's unfair to be charged ridiculous amounts in fees to be "USDA Certified Organic". They feel they are being charged to do something good for the people and the planet. Labelling a product "organically grown" doesn't always cut it. People trust "certified". What do you suggest to make the organic certification more affordable? more

Resolved Question: Meat vs. vegetarian?

OK, so I'm a woman with two kids and a husband, on one income, and money is very tight, needless to say. What I'm wondering is, why won't manufacturers of vegetarian food (Morningstar Farms, Boca, etc.) make their foods more "price friendly"? The same could be said for organic foods. Apparently it's better for you, but people like me can't afford it. For example: A 2 lb. bag of Banquet chicken nuggets is roughly $3.50 on sale. A tiny 8 oz. box of Morningstar farms veggie chick'n nuggets is $3.00. A coworker let me try one of her veggie nuggets, and really--I think it's better than the meat variety, but with the number of chicken nuggets my two toddlers eat, I can't afford it. Why can't they make them more affordable? Surely it can't cost THAT much more to harvest/process vegetables versus meat. Can someone please tell me why? They tell you don't eat meat--it's unhealthy for you, yet when you buy the vegetable based products, they're SO expensive. Help! That's the problem right now...my kids (ages 3 and 2) will NOT eat really any vegetables (except for corn and peas, lol, which [I assume] other parents of toddlers can relate to). I could switch to legumes, leavy green vegs, etc. but if I did, I'd worry that they would eat even less food than they do now. Hopefully in the next few years, they'll learn to get used to what I make. Having toddlers is really difficult! :O) more

Resolved Question: Dog Food Help?

My dog has #2 problems and I need to change his diet. He is a Mini Poodle 1 years old. And right now he is on Canned Ol'Roy since my aunt has money issues but I offered to buy them food. So yea. So I went to Wal*Mart with my dad to look at food. I want a HUGE bag of dog food that you can make moiste. I don't care if the dog's wont eat it b/c it's too dry. Once they start starving they'll eat it. (That sounds bad, but I don't mean it like that). But I looked at all the 40 lb bags and the first ingrediant was Corn. Even Ol' Roy cans have meat as first ingrident. It CAN'T be organic. Nope I'm against it. But I would like it to be fairly affordable and good for the skin. What would you recommend? Oh and I have to be able to drive to a store to get it, no internet only food....I only went to WalMart to get a feel for the price. I didn't like there dog food. I looked for Canidae and I think I'm in love but I'm about to look at the others suggested. And I know Ol'Roy is nasty which is why I want a change and he is going to the vet in a week.. Thanks everyone! more

Resolved Question: So you say you want national health care?

Instead of buying the newest updated iphone, 60" plasma tv, buying all organic food, having the newest laptop which can run you 4,000 dollars, all your furniture from ikea/pier 1, mind expanding drugs and generally speaking keeping up with the Jones', why don't you taper your habitual spending lifestyle which ultimately would give way to affordable healthcare, right? People feel entitled to this that and the other after they've purchased everything they "want." How about you get your priorities right? Arguments?or buying your mouthpiece "grills" or that long chain that dangles from your neck, or those 20 inch rims for your caddy more

Resolved Question: Give ten things that you believe would make a perfect society?

1.) racial, ethnic, and cultural diversity mixture - people from different races, ethnic groups, and cultures uniting together in harmony contributing to the perfect society. 2.) high speed internet 3.) free education 4.) affordable health-care 5.) mandatory recycling of all things from glass to paper to plastic 6.) solar powered / electric society. The use of gas would be minimal or non-existant. The majority of the country would be powered by solar and electric energy 7.) all organic foods and drinks no chemicals 8.) A justice system built on the success of the justice system in other nations. (if cameras help to reduce shoplifting in another country it can help in mine 9.) Mixture language - I would create a language for my society that has elements of most other languages, This will make it easier to learn other languages. 10.) Mandatory disease testing. The best way to eradicate diseases is to test and study it. more

Does anyone know anything about the Loyola Park / Rogers Park area? I am looking for a place to purchase, however my budget is about 110 K. so I am looking for an affordable, safe, diverse location for someone who likes to shop at whole foods and trader Joes and who loves to eat Thai food and diners that offer creative entrees that do not need to be organic, but offer dishes that fall on the healthier side, Living near the water / lake is important and venues to listen to live music is somewhat important. Does anyone have any advice? Thanks in advance. Thanks for your help. more

Resolved Question: Affordable natural cosmetics?

I want to switch to all-natural cosmetic products for health reasons. But when I go to the natural cosmetic section in Whole Foods, I'm astounded by the high prices. I remember picking up a tiny bottle of organic conditioner that cost $24.99! Others were more reasonable at around $10. But they were all still so expensive. Has anyone found some natural skin care/hair care products that are natural, safe, and not outrageously expensive? (I'm not looking for cheap, just reasonable!) Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Cuelty-free, organic, environmentally friendly, fair-trade and the rest?

Resolved Question: How to choose health products that efficient and affordable?

i've been joining a health product association more than 3 years already but i only ate a few quantity of product because i find it very expensive but somehow i can feel the effectiveness of the product.is there any product out there which is effective, affordable, organic, wholesome &etc. or can we buy the herbs ourself and boil the herbs before consuming.is that also effective compare to prepared in pill or other form found in market.actually i know money cannot buy health but if we spend to much on health product that eventually distubing other aspects of our life than it would be meaningless as well, is it. so i want to find economical way to take care of my family health. maybe some of you would say eat less cholesterol, exercise more ,eat less junk food , eat more fiber or vegetables, sleep well and do not stress too much but nowadays those mentioned ways only partly worked we still need other kind of supplements to take care of our complex body. more

Resolved Question: What will it take to make organic/natural/whole foods affordable to people other than middle class yuppies?

We're all told that this is what we NEED to be eating. But have you seen the prices in such designer markets and roadside stands?? I know I know, the farmer needs to make a decent living, but there is another side to this economic story. Normally an economy of scale brings prices down, but the Madison Avenue spin on "natural foods" is that it HAS to be a million small farms and all local. What is fact and what is fiction? What sacred cows can be sacrificed here to make this affordable for everyone? Do we have to become communistI also find that a lot of people's definition of a "decent living" is way more than what they could actually get by on, so I'm a little skeptical of organic farmers who drive Range Rovers and whine that they are barely surviving.Lisa, do we need to subsidize organic farmers who drive Range Rovers? more

Resolved Question: If cost were NOT a factor, would you do things that are environmentally "friendly".?

If Hybrids were more affordable, would you drive one? If solar pannels were cheap would you put them on your roof? If Trains ran on schedual and were more affordable would you ride one? If organic foods, and vegitarian foods, cost the same as regular food would you chow on some local produce? more

Resolved Question: Need advice on relocating to East Bay; which neighborhood?

I need some advice... I'm moving to the SF area in a few months from the midwest, but am not sure where a girl like me would be happy living; so I thought I'd ask someone who is from there. I'm a little bit goth, a little punk, alt, Bettie Page-ish, and frequent cool coffehouses. I have a few tattoos & piercings; that you cant see during my corporate job during the day. I'm not all about the goth/punk scene. I like bike-riding & farmers markets & stuff during the day too. I like gardens, organic food, SAFE & QUIET neighborhoods. I'm looking for a neighborhood that is across the bay that would suit me. Some people have suggested Rockridge, Lake Merritt area, or Berkeley. I've never been to any of these areas. I am regular middle working class & am able to support myself just fine, but not rich by any means. I'm just looking for an affordable studio apartment, something quiet, and in a relatively safe neighborhood. I like places with character (clawfoot tubs, hardwoods, etc). more

Resolved Question: What is the best way to do a full body detox cleanse? Ive been sluggish & tired lately, I want to start fresh!

I want to do a full body detox cleanse. I have been so tired and sluggish lately, and need something to cleanse my system. I last did a cleanse about 4 months ago & it really helped, but they have since discontinued the product I used. I am a 24 y.o female, moderately active lifestyle, in s. ontario. I eat mainly organic and healthy foods, no fast food at all. Walk my dog every day with my son. Am on a budget, and some cleanse programs I checked out are ridiculously expensive. I'd like to find something that won't cost me anything outrageous, and is affordable to do every 3 months or so. I take a multi vitamin, B12, B6, and iron supplements. I have IBS, and cleansing seems to help calm it down a lot, too. Any info on how to do a really in depth, full detox would be fabulous. Thanks. more

Resolved Question: If our health really mattered, shouldn't the price of healthier foods be more affordable??

I see candy bars and chocolates going for five or even SIX for a dollar. Isn't that crazy?? Little Debbies are like 85 cents for a box! And that's regular priced. When they go on sale, their even more accessible. How come the organic and healthy foods never go on such cheap sales?? Does anyone care out there???? They just want us to deteriorate our health so then we can go on all the medicines out there to "reverse" the effects. These meds cost $$$. No one cares about health anymore. It's al about money, money and more money! That's really sad... North Americans are the FATTEST people on the face of the Earth! We are the super consumers! There is enough food to feed ALL the people that live here on Earth if it was all distributed evenly. But NO. We are such an orally obsessed nation. We have to constantly chew on something. Snack on something. Munch on something. Eat, eat, and then eat some more....When will we ever realize??? WAKE UP PEOPLE! They are killing us!!!! more

Resolved Question: Any recommendations for good/funky medium sized towns to live in (US)?

Ideally - a place with a central downtown, interesting buildings, a good art scene, places to take classes, access to organic foods, close to natural space – like parks, ocean, rivers etc. Affordable with a moderate climate. I know I am asking a lot – but it can’t hurt. Examples, Bolder Colorado (not quite affordable), Ann Arbor Michigan (too cold/limited natural areas), Austin Texas (maybe too big?/too hot) more
